Hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel sheet is one of the most widely specified corrosion-protected steel products in construction, automotive manufacturing, and general fabrication. This guide covers what procurement managers and engineers need to know about coating specifications, thickness ranges, surface quality, and supplier selection.

How Hot-Dip Galvanizing Works

The hot-dip process immerses cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel sheet into a bath of molten zinc at approximately 450°C. The zinc reacts with the steel surface to form a series of iron-zinc alloy layers, topped with pure zinc. This metallurgical bond provides barrier protection (the zinc physically blocks moisture and oxygen) and cathodic protection (zinc sacrificially corrodes to protect exposed steel at cut edges and scratches).

Coating thickness is measured in grams of zinc per square metre (g/m²). Common commercial grades range from Z60 (60 g/m², ~8.5 µm per side) to Z275 (275 g/m², ~19.5 µm per side). Heavier coatings extend service life but can affect formability in tight-radius bending operations. For roofing and outdoor cladding, Z180 to Z275 is the typical specification range.

Zinc Coating Designations and Standards

Galvanized steel sheet coating grades are classified under major international standards. EN 10346 uses the Z-prefix system (Z100, Z140, Z200, Z225, Z275). ASTM A653 uses G-prefix designations in oz/ft² — G60 ≈ Z180, G90 ≈ Z275. Chinese GB/T 2518 uses the same Z-prefix system as EN 10346. Buyers should specify which standard applies to ensure compliance with local building codes and import regulations.

Steel Substrate Grades

HDG steel sheet starts with a cold-rolled or hot-rolled substrate that determines the mechanical properties of the finished product. Common substrate grades include:

  • DX51D+Z / SGCC: Commercial quality for general forming and bending applications.
  • DX52D+Z / SGCD: Drawing quality for moderate deep-drawing operations.
  • DX53D+Z: Deep-drawing quality for complex stamping and forming.
  • S220GD+Z to S350GD+Z: Structural grades with minimum yield strengths from 220 MPa to 350 MPa, used for purlins, framing, and load-bearing components.

The "+Z" suffix in EN designations indicates the zinc coating. Equivalent ASTM structural grades are designated under A653 with Grade 33 through Grade 80.

Thickness and Width Availability

HDG steel sheet is produced in thicknesses from 0.12 mm to 4.0 mm, with the 0.3 mm to 2.0 mm range dominating construction demand. Standard widths include 1,000 mm, 1,219 mm (48 inches), 1,250 mm, and 1,500 mm. Material is supplied as coil (typically 3–10 metric tons per coil) or cut-to-length sheets.

Thickness tolerance follows the applicable standard, typically ±0.05 mm for cold-rolled substrate at 1.0 mm nominal. Buyers should clarify whether ordered thickness refers to base metal thickness or total coated thickness, as the zinc layer adds approximately 0.02–0.05 mm per side depending on coating weight.

Surface Quality and Spangle Classification

Surface appearance after galvanizing varies with process control and substrate quality:

  • Regular spangle: Visible zinc crystal pattern, standard for general construction and hidden structural components.
  • Minimized spangle: Reduced crystal size through controlled cooling, smoother finish suitable for direct painting.
  • Zero spangle: Uniform matte surface with no visible crystal pattern, specified for appliance-grade and high-end architectural applications requiring premium paint finish.

Surface quality grade (A, B, or C under EN 10346) defines acceptable defect levels. Grade A permits no visible defects on the best side. Grade C allows imperfections typical of commercial material. Critical-surface buyers should discuss quality expectations with the supplier and reference the applicable standard in the purchase order.

Key Applications Across Industries

In building and construction, HDG sheet is roll-formed into roofing profiles, wall cladding, purlins, floor decking, and light-gauge steel framing. The automotive sector uses galvanized sheet for body panels, chassis components, and underbody structural parts. Appliance manufacturers consume significant tonnage for washer drums, dryer cabinets, water heater jackets, and HVAC enclosures.

General fabrication shops rely on galvanized sheet for bracketry, electrical enclosures, ductwork, and custom components where uncoated steel would corrode within the product's service life.

Supplier Selection and Quality Verification

When sourcing HDG steel sheet, verify the supplier provides mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 or equivalent, documenting steel grade, zinc coating mass, mechanical properties, and dimensional tolerances. Confirm packing configuration (eye-to-sky or eye-to-wall for coils), edge protection, and moisture barrier for export shipments. Ask about minimum order quantities and lead times for both stock and mill-order material.
