What is oil casing?

By MnZn October 27th, 2025 246 views

Oil casing is an important pipe used in oil well drilling and oil and gas production in the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is a type of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) and mainly includes oil pipe and casing. It plays a key role in the oil industry.
Oil pipes are primarily used to transport oil and gas from the bottom of a well to the surface, serving as the conduit for oil and gas production. During oil well production, the oil pipes are located inside the casing, directly in contact with oil, gas, and formation fluids, and are subject to frequent pressure fluctuations and corrosive media during the production process.
Casings support the wellbore walls of oil and gas wells, ensuring the proper operation of the entire well during drilling and after completion. They prevent wellbore collapse, isolate different pressure zones and fluid layers, such as oil and water zones, and prevent cross-flow of formation fluids.
Specifications:
Oil tubing outer diameters typically range from 26.67mm to 219.08mm, with wall thicknesses from 3.18mm to 22.2mm.
Casing outer diameters typically range from 114.3mm to 508mm. API specifies three lengths: R-1 (4.88-7.62m), R-2 (7.62-10.36m), and R-3 (10.36m and longer).
Steel grade and buckle type
Steel Grade: Tubing and casing come in a variety of steel grades, including J55, K55, N80, L80, C90, T95, P110, and Q125. Different steel grades offer varying strengths and performance to suit different well conditions and geological conditions.
Thread Type: Threads primarily include API standard threads and special threads. API standard threads include short thread cone (STC), long thread cone (LTC), and trapezoidal thread (BTC). Special threads (premium connections) such as VAM, FOX, and Hydril offer improved sealing and fatigue resistance, making them suitable for use in specialized well conditions.
Implementation Standards:
Oil casing and tubing primarily adhere to the American Petroleum Institute's API SPEC 5CT standard, along with related standards such as API 5B. These standards clearly define the material, dimensions, performance, and inspection methods for oil casing and tubing. Domestic standards, such as GB/T 19830, are also compatible with API standards.
Special Types:
With the advancement of oil extraction technology and the need for complex well conditions, a number of specialized types of oil casing have emerged, such as SEW casing, H₂S corrosion-resistant casing, and expandable casing. SEW high-collapse-resistant casing is widely used in oil wells with high formation pressures, such as those in rock salt formations, mudstone formations, and high-pressure water injection wells.
Special Types:

Whether you need J55, N80, or P110 steel grade tubing and casing, with standard thread types or special thread specifications, we have ample inventory and quality that meets API 5CT standards. Feel free to contact us to discuss your purchasing needs!
